YANGON: Myanmar’s new government has been in office for about a week, but some people have already expressed concern over some of its practices in parliament. The new National League for Democracy (NLD) government on Tuesday pushed through a bill appointing its party leader Aung San Suu Kyi as state counsellor, despite criticism from some parliamentarians.

Saw Kapi, director of The Salween Institute for Public Policy, said: "In the interest of the country, it will be much better if you start with or show a culture of tolerance, inclusion, and that you have the capacity to also consider opinions that are also different from yours and show that in the process of making decisions, you take into consideration your opponents’ ideas and reasoning as well.“That will be a good institutional culture that NLD can start building.”Many are looking to Ms Aung San Suu Kyi to help Myanmar’s nascent parliamentary system evolve and develop, but observers fear if she does not consult the people widely and get consensus on policies, she may be inviting trouble."It becomes what we call the tyranny of the majority in the parliament," said political analyst Khin Maung Zaw.

"The most dangerous threat to democracy is the negligence of the minority's sufferings or feelings, especially if the minority has very strong power or something."Once they suffer or have some bad feelings against the ruling party, it adds up more and more and then sometimes it can break out. So I really worry that it starts small but later spreads out into bigger problems.”Saw Kapi added: "If you continue to push through your way or act like the previous government or the previous parliament for example, then you’re not breaking from the past, you continue what happened before and that’s not going to be good for the country.”Some say the new government may only be trying to exhibit its decisiveness and get things moving quickly, but others warn that if Ms Aung San Suu Kyi’s relationship with the three key players - the military, nationalists and ethnic groups - weaken, her government’s term in office will be even more challenging.
